The integration of Urban Agriculture into our building projects is integral in the process of transitioning towards resilient food systems. Historically, these local systems greatly increase resilience in cities during times of instability such as pandemics, climate disasters, economic crises, war, etc.
Urban Agriculture takes many forms within Auckland and other cities, from community farms to walkable food forests, rooftop gardens, hydroponic indoor gardens, and even small vertical gardens on apartment balconies.
Urban Agriculture is a requirement in the full Living Building Challenge programme and can also gain points under the Green Star Innovation Category as a Global Sustainability measure.
In the upcoming NZGBC Buildings Tool, there is also an opportunity to gain exceptional performance points for providing interaction with nature through urban agriculture within the Healthy category for Credit 15 (picture occupants stopping for a moment to pick themselves a snack 🍓😊).
Have you thought about how you could incorporate urban agriculture in your projects?
Above are some beautiful images of urban agriculture right in the heart of Auckland! 🌱🦚🌽🍒🍊
